RISEOFTHESON post: JUVENILE PREVIEW!

The 2nd prized division of the NABA tournament behind the Open division, the division where college recruits from the Motherland (Philippines) come to scout. Few names scouted out of this division who are currently in the Philippines are, Nico DeChavez from Jersey Shore back in 2006, as well as Norman Penola of the Scarborough Falcons, both of whom are playing for Ateneo. The Juvenile division sports the oldest of the youth, where NABA veterans are put to the final test to showcase their skill and talent representing their cities. This year, the division will host the ballers born between years 1990-1992 with some squeezing in with NABA late birthdays.

This year, we take in a division with veteran squads, young battle tested warriors and hungry NABA players who have yet to taste hardware, or championship game. Let’s take a look at some of the favorites as well as notable squads who always make noise at NABA.

In NABA 2007, Glendale Heights repeated the Illinois Juvenile division championship since Chicago had won in 2006. They had a rough outing in 2008, but any players returning from that squad would have 2 year advantage on the younger competition as 3rd Year Juvenile veterans. Many are on the lookout if Danny Trinidad will be acting as Court General for this team as he helped lead the team in 2007 as a 17 yr old to their championship. Danny’s absence was felt in 2008 as they failed to finish in he top 3 of the juvenile division. Glendale Heights will be looking at their size and athleticism to their advantage. In 2008, Scarborough brought their dynasty to the next level winning the Juvenile division with the core of their players at 17 years old. The defending champs will be put to the ultimate test as the loss of Norman Penola calls upon the squad to rally together and play as a team to keep their contention and fight for a 5peat. Their team chemistry as well as deadly touch behind the arc is always a threat to other teams. As a reminder to their competition, this team has been together for almost a decade, and if any team were to have strong chemistry it would be this group.

One of the surprise teams that has performed well in 2007 and 2008 has been Durham. Aside from their strong young squads, their Juvenile teams has proven to be worthy of being legitimate championship contenders. With their 2nd place finish losing to Scarborough, and losing to SIPAG in the 2007 quarter finals. Durham sports high intensity teams, with hardnosed ball players on both ends of the court. Whoever they are matched with their first game will be a good game for teams to scout them. I recommend all teams keep their eye on this team and find out what their weaknesses are in case you play them. One team that has slowly fallen off the grid is the Toronto Empire, Dolce. Their last strong showing came in NABA 2007 when they fell short to Glendale Heights in the Championship. I’m not even sure if Dolce-Toronto sported a team in 2008 let alone a strong contender. One thing for sure is, this age group Dolce-Toronto could feature comes from a line of strong Dolce teams from the past, especially the players born in ’91-’92. Will Dolce make a run this year to redeem themselves? We will see. One other sleeper could be Brampton, a team like the regular Fil-Can teams high intensity and fastbreak oriented squads. I havn’t gotten the chance to really see this team but they have sported some legit younger teams and will always be a team to look out for at NABA.

Onto the other Fil-Ams alongside Glendale Heights. Further east we have the NY-NJ squads. One of the teams from the NY-NJ Tri-state Metro area that teams always look forward to playing is Staten Island’s SIPAG. This team’s got it all, with experienced rookies, to hungry veterans; Athleticism, size, talent and one of the best coaching staffs at NABA. Does anybody remember their NABA 2007 junior team and starting lineup? I recommend the competition to watch their games and catch any weaknesses they have.

Onto the New Jersey squads; Jersey Shore last year gave Glendale Heights a scare, but fell short to them and that loss pretty much set the tone for their tournament as I believed they only played 1 or 2 more games. This year, they are lead by PG, Polo DeLa Costa aka Bruce Lee and Dylan Castellano. They sport an athletic starting 5 but their lack of depth might end up deciding their fate for the tournament. If this team is to perform in the tournament, their bench will have to step it up and really provide productive minutes. They act as a sleeper since many teams will overlook them from their performance in 2008, which could be JSAG’s weapon going into NABA. Central Jersey-Kalahi will be sporting a young but determined squad as well. A guard oriented team, the squad will be looking to the leadership of veterans John Erick Ramos, and Jun Ignacio. Strong contributions from young studs Ace Derecho and Rob Gomulka. Despite of the loss of their most experienced player, CJ Cruz, due to injury, they are also a highly motivated group. The strongest of the NJ teams is North Jersey, bringing back a Juvenile team since their last showing in 2006. None of the players from that 2006 team will be making an appearance, but the young group showing up to this NABA will be an automatic contender. The young core is compiled of players featured on the NABA 2008 Junior division championship team. With that core, as well as a few new major acquisitions, the North Jersey Juveniles could automatically be one of the favorites going into NABA 2009.

Possible NABA 2009 Juvenile sleepers are Detroit, Winnipeg and Washington D.C.
